In a world that often promotes self-interest, we must remember a profound truth: true happiness is found not in serving ourselves, but in serving others. Have you ever noticed how those who are the most self-obsessed are often the most miserable? It may seem counterintuitive, yet those who turn outward—who seek to lift and serve their communities—are those who find the greatest fulfillment.

Volunteering isn’t just a benefit to the community; it’s a gift to yourself. While countless books and podcasts promise the path to happiness through various systems and strategies, the answer is often far simpler: serve others. Service is a gift that gives back twice—once to the community and once to ourselves.

At our recent volunteer appreciation dinner, we had the honor of recognizing seven residents who embody this principle. Each received the Orem Orchard Award for their commitment to growing good things in our city:

  • Ashlie Mann – Oremfest Committee
  • Amy Green – Neighborhood Commission
  • Rodney Gardner – Heritage Commission
  • Joyce Otten – Senior Citizen Commission
  • Katrina Brittner – Library Commission
  • Adam Robertson – Arts Council
  • Jim Michaelis – Public Works Commission

These dedicated volunteers, and hundreds more like them, make it possible for our city to thrive. Collectively, they contribute thousands of hours every year, doing work that enhances Orem in ways paid staff alone could never achieve. They lift, support, and love our community in ways that transform us all.

A shining example of this spirit of service can be seen in the myHometown initiative in Geneva Heights. The neighborly kindness and support flowing from this project make a meaningful difference every week. Visit the CRC, and you’ll feel the warmth of the community. Come spring, neighborhood clean-ups will begin, and we invite you to join and experience the impact firsthand.

If you’re searching for a way to bring more joy into your life, consider volunteering. Opportunities abound, both large and small, from organized programs to spontaneous acts of kindness. Every contribution makes Orem better.

We don’t serve for recognition, but for the honor of making a difference in our community. In my nearly three years as Mayor, I’ve personally witnessed what service can do for a city. If you want to be happier, start serving today. I promise you won’t regret it.

I’ll see you next month.
