The primary responsibility for the traffic unit is to provide a safer city for all citizens through traffic enforcement, education and innovation. The Traffic Unit is comprised of Officers trained in major traffic accident investigation, and enforcement in high volume pedestrian/vehicular commute locations.
Commonly referred to as Motors, the traffic unit utilizes Police Motorcycles to enforce traffic laws and to focus on the most dangerous causes to fatal or serious injury accidents. The traffic unit is comprised of six Officers and one Police Sergeant. Additionally a seventh Officer is assigned to the traffic unit primarily whose focus is on alcohol enforcement and impaired driving. Currently a goal the traffic unit is focused on is reducing fatal and serious injury motor vehicle accidents caused by distracted driving.
Recently the Orem Police Department was awarded a federal grant funded by the Utah Highway Safety Office to assist with intervention, education and enforcement of distracted driving.
