Asphalt Work – On average, City crews lay 5,500 to 6,000 tons of asphalt each year.

Trench Patching – Repairing Open Trenches

These can be a wide range of sizes and in various locations throughout the city.  These are commonly utility trenches from other Public Works sections such as water, wastewater, storm water, parks, traffic, etc.  Occasionally, these can include an abandoned trench of unknown origin.  These are largely done by hand work, however when needed an asphalt paver can be used.

Gutterlines – Repairing the Roadway Next to the Gutter and/or Sidewalk

This work is generally done after new concrete installation for sidewalk replacement has occurred.  Commonly the trench is 2 to 3 feet wide (can be wider) and varies in length.  Patching is normally done seven days after concrete has been installed.  This type of work can also occur after cross gutter replacement, storm drain installation, or other types of concrete work.

Leveling – Repairing Depressed Areas of Roadway with a Thin Placement of Asphalt

These can be a wide range of sizes and in various locations in the city.  This work commonly occurs during the preparation work for slurry seal, overlay projects, and can be scheduled at any time as long as temperatures are 80 degrees and rising.

Potholes – Temporary Repair of Failed Asphalt

This work is done on a continued basis as needed.  All potholes are filled with either hot mix asphalt or a cold mix material (UPM) as a temporary patch until an R&R can be scheduled.

Reconstruct – Repairing Larger Failed Areas of Roadway

This work is generally larger than 1000 square feet and done with an asphalt paver.  This includes saw cutting, removing the asphalt, improving and/or replacing the base layer, re-compacting, and placing new asphalt.  This work commonly occurs when areas of road have been identified as needing immediate attention.

Strip Pave – New Installation of Asphalt Along New Sidewalk Install

This work is generally done after new sidewalk has been installed in a location where improvements have been made.  These are larger than a regular gutterline and require the use of an asphalt paver.  This includes saw cutting, removing the asphalt, improving and/or replacing the base layer, re-compacting, and placing new asphalt.

Remove and Replace (R&R) – Repairing Smaller Failed Areas of Roadway

This work is generally smaller than 1000 square feet and can be done by hand work.  This includes saw cutting, removing the asphalt, improving and/or replacing the base layer, re-compacting, and placing new asphalt.  This work commonly occurs during the preparation work for slurry seal, overlay projects, and can be scheduled at any time.

Miscellaneous

Any other task requiring asphalt such as berms, shoulder work, drainage ditches, weed abatement, etc.
